The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: "Belong"

Some have already noted a similarity to early Smashing Pumpkins on the title track from the Pains of Being Pure at Heart's sophomore album Belong, and while that assessment is fairly obvious, it's also completely accurate. From the whispered, slightly nasally Corgan-esque vocals to the crushingly distorted layers of guitars, everything about "Belong" oozes Siamese Dream. Of course, that all makes sense given that the album was produced by Flood and mixed by Alan Moulder, the same people responsible for those early Pumpkins classics. While it's not like the band has suddenly morphed their sound into hard rock, it's refreshing to hear The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have evolved enough to incorporate a little heaviness to balance out their sometimes overly effete jangle. Nice to see the Pains are switching things up. Weird to see Dream Diary copping their early-'09 moves. Thoughts on Dream Diary, anyone?

I am totally okay with this. I miss the Smashing Pumpkins sounding worthwhile, even if it takes the Pains of Being Pure at Heart to do it.
