‘The Original Dom Kennedy’ (Mixtape)

Over the past few years, California’s Dom Kennedy has steadily developed a faithful and always-growing fan base thanks to projects like 2010’s From The Westside, With Love. And in the weeks leading up to their release, he used the same promotional tools used by most blog-friendly rappers. You know, the three-to-four leaks, a video or two, and some scattered behind-the-scenes footage.

But for his newest and best effort, The Original Dom Kennedy, all he did was announce on Twitter that he would be dropping it soon. There were no grandiose press releases or leaks, just a message that he had a free mixtape coming. And today, he again hopped on his Twitter account and liberated the link for The Original Dom Kennedy.

As someone who wasn’t convinced prior to this effort, I can tell you I’m a believer now. There are a few missteps, such as the sing-song “Can’t Let Go,” but overall, this is one hell of a free offering. Along with a few subdued cuts, it boasts tracks that jump from G-funk throwbacks (“The Homies”) to minimalist head-nodders (“CDC”). The Original Dom Kennedy features production from Pac Div-affiliate Swiff D, Hit-Boy, and Chuck Inglish, of the Cool Kids.
