The National took to Fallon's show last night to perform "So Far Around the Bend," their ruminative and mellow track from the excellent Dark Was the Night compilation. Their performance was decidely low-key, with Matt Berninger's voice barely rising above a whisper, but was augmented by a robust string and woodwinds section led by Nico Muhly. It'd be hard to imagine The National wrapping a song up with a clarinet solo (not to mention playing Jimmy Fallon) a few months ago, but here they are thanks to their charity work.
Dark Was the Night is out now. [Stereogum]
