The National: "Afraid Of Everyone" and "Conversation 16" (Live At Big Ears) (Video)

The fever pitch for New York brooders the National's new album, High Violet, is starting to reach a fever pitch, largely thanks to the band releasing singles and performing much of the album's material live. Including at the recent Big Ears festival, where they trotted out the sturdy "Afraid of Everyone" (above) and the buzzing "Conversation 16." The National are one of the last organic big bands on the block; their fanbase has grown steadily as they have gotten steadily more musically excellent, and everything is hitting at the right moment for High Violet. Things could get really big for The National after it finally hits shelves on May 11. [Stereogum]

The National

disagree. Alligator is by far their best record for me. Cherry Tree EP is at the top as well.

People keep talking about The National as if they aren't already a giant band. Boxer was a massive international success and they are playing Radio City Music Hall. They've already arrived!

^ I saw them in 05: half the crowd split after Clap Yr Hands Say Yeah played. I guess that won't happen again.... T'was their loss. It was one of the best shows I've seen. That said, new songs seem good but not great. *shrugs*

They're big now, but they're not Vampire Weekend or Phoenix big yet.
