Only John Darnielle could open a song with a self-effacing quip like “This is a song/ With the same four chords/ I use most of the time/ When I’ve got something on my mind.” And sure enough, “You Were Cool” is classic Mountain Goats, this time about the quiet kid everyone made fun of but you still thought was kinda cool. “I hope the people who did you wrong/ Have trouble sleeping at night,” he coos to the cheers of the audience.
