The Killers

"Happy Birthday Guadalupe" (Video/Stream)

Who knew that dudes from Las Vegas cared about charity? For the fourth consecutive year, the favorite sons of the desert oasis, the Killers, will be releasing a Christmas song to benefit (RED), who work to fight AIDS in Africa. The track is called "Happy Birthday Guadalupe," and features work from Wild Light and Mariachi El Bronx, two bands that opened for The Killers on their latest tour. This arrangement is a bit more logical than last year's collaboration with Elton John and Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop boys.

"Happy Birthday Guadalupe" sounds about exactly what you would expect from a Killers song with such a title, as it rides an obvious south-of-the-border feel vaguely reminiscent of Calexico. But even the heavy-handed culturalism and spoken-word breakdown can't distract The Killers from doing what they do best: Making a undeniably listenable track with a bombastic, instantly memorable hook. I've been singing this song in my head all day. Love it.
