How can you tell Kendrick Lamar doesn’t fit the bill for the rapper stereotype? ‘Cause he celebrates achievement by giving something back to his fans. Yes, with his debut album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, selling over 242,000 first-week copies—enough to earn him a debut No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200—hip-hop’s golden boy gifts a brand new track, “The Jig Is Up (Dump’n),” produced by J. Cole and Canei Finch.
The beat is more haunting than it is triumphant, but that doesn’t bother the Black Hippy, who skews everything from pop critics, “fake” artists and Shyne’s recent comments into hilarious lyrical backslaps: “I pray to God this beat is good enough for Shyne/ If not J. Cole your shit is traaaash… at least my opinion just made everyone laugh.” Ouch!
Let’s just say this sample does nothing to ease the excitement for that full-length Kendrick-Cole collaboration we’ve been hearing about.
