The Gossip: "Heavy Cross" (Stream)

The Gossip's Rick Rubin-produced Columbia debut, Music for Men, is due out in June, and the first single, "Heavy Cross," is now streaming at the band's MySpace. There's a bigger and glossier sheen, where the band's past albums have still had easily apparent vestiges of grime, that's been excised with "Heavy Cross." Rubin basically bet the farm on the Gossip, and they certainly deliver one of their most pop-leaning songs to date; Beth Ditto's vocals are moved way out front, while the guitars and synths are set firmly to "rock-disco."

Is this the band with the great big fat person singing--Oh look at that it is.

In ALL SERIOUSNESS, though, I've never really gotten these guys or their popularity. Also, they seem like one of these bands that is hyped to the moon for no particular reason, and the support from actual fans is never really there in as big a way as it may seem. But I guess I could be wrong.

and your dumbass joke about beth ditto's body is painfully unfunny. the reason the gossip has so much buzz now is because for the past ten years they've been blowing up basements, house shows, and dive bars across the country. their fan base is insanely dedicated, and apparently, rock journalists have finally decided to pull the dicks outta their ears and started paying attention to a talented rock band they'd been ignoring since day one because the singer is a LARGE GAY WOMAN- the kind of woman internet douchebags assume are safe to make dumbass jokes about. go see a show and get a clue.

yup, you're wrong

This new song sounds more poppier than they've ever been but it makes sense given how remixes of their songs have been hits on the dance floor. I think they are well deserving of the hype they've had though. Not enough bands have the punk rock in them anymore.

The Gossip are the real deal. Very deserving of the hype. And Beth is a soul crushing monster. They have always been very parallel with YYYs in my head. Even in pure punk mode, they are very danceable. So the syth addition seems natural in my opinion.

I'm kind of ambivalent towards them. They're okay, but I think that they are cut a lot of slack due to Ditto's personality and the hype.

Does this mean no more brashness? I'm all for artists evolving as long as they still make good music. This is good music.
