Hearing samples in electronic music has almost as much to do with the joy of recognition as it does with the sample's utility in the track. Axel Willner's projectThe Field's use of samples is discreet and harmonious, as opposed to the gimmick antics of someone like Girl Talk, which rely almost entirely on recognition. Like the Lionel Richie sample that sneaks out at the end of "A Paw In My Face" from The Field's From Here We Go Sublime, the Cocteau Twins sample that pokes its head up through the hazy ephemera in the middle of "The More That I Do" is a nice surprise for fans, but quickly retreats into the greater melody of Axel Willner's creation.
The Field's latest, Yesterday & Today will be released in the U.S. on Anti-, May 19. [Pitchfork]
I love that Cocteau Twins sample. The stream is sadly not working though.
