The Decemberists have jumped some 200 years in their character sketches to record a track about Valerie Plame, the CIA operative who was outed by reporter Robert Novak, titled “Valerie Plame.” Colin Meloy imagines himself as a person on the outside of the controversy falling in love with Valerie Plame, as his band do their horns and antiquated sounds thing. I don’t think the song is supposed to be political, more like Meloy found someone who caught his songwriting fancy more than Chinese women from fables.
The song appears on the Decemberists’ Always a Bridesmaid 12-inch series, and is due out on November 3. [Stereogum]
