The Dears

Money Babies (Video)

Average Rating: 6.25
Dears’ fourth album, Missiles, comes out next week, and the general tone of the album is that we’re all screwed. “Money Babies” is part economics lesson (“our money is elastic”) and part poverty worry (“gotta get enough for the babies”), and the equally preachy video finds a guy walking through what looks like post-disaster America (or is it Canada since Dears are Canucks?) witnessing some dark recesses of humanity. What the song and video are meant to make you do or feel is debatable (I mean, the news is like at least 45 times more depressing than this), but if the conclusion is any indication, after the apocalypse comes, all wee need to do is find a great big garage door that opens to another universe and we will all be fine. The Dears are pretty much my favorite band ever, they never disappoint. I can't wait to see them at CMJ.

The best song on the new Paste compilation by far.

Lush layers of thoughtfully arranged elements, fascinating guitar timing, strange and almost primitive or at least "uninformed" drumming, ethereal and wonderful vocals.

This video is a weak and unimaginative distraction from the song, next time just put a camera in front of the band and show me the musicians making their pretty music!

liebekrieg is so right on the money. To the video producers: Take your obtuse preaching elsewhere.
