The Cure

Freakshow (Video)

Here's a live version of the second single (out today) from the forthcoming Cure album, which is still set for an autumn release. While the first single, "The Only One," was a sparkling, poppy affair that harked back to the band's glory days, the follow-up, "Freakshow," is a bit of a different animal. Admittedly, there's a precedent in The Cure catalog for "Freakshow"'s paleface funk-rock -- see their not-bad-at-all 1990 single "Never Enough" -- but this one bears sonic fingerprints that are worryingly similar to some Smash Mouth castoff, and is frequently as tuneless as that comparison implies. Keep your fingers crossed for single number three.

If you're Robert Smith, at what point do you say to your publicist, "You know what? I'm overweight and middle-aged -- I'll be 50 soon. Let's get a new look."

If you're bwall, at what point do you say, "i'm an loser who is overly concerned with trivial matters." not to mention no one but robert decides on his "look" - publicist whores be damned.

If you're editor of a music site, you probably have no choice but to be aware of trivial matters related to bands.

That said, nobody likes "an loser."

On a side note related to the original comment, Robert Smith did an interview with Spin a few years ago where he said, "I will most certainly not be wearing black and lipstick in 2011." 2011 is getting awfully close.

if you're me, you probably find these three above comments uproaringly hilarious, because who's business is it really whether or not robert is still wearing his make-up now? how about on the day he may die? not ours. it's robert's. he's been wearing it before he even hit puberty, do you think he's gonna stop when he hits 60? I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT.

and on the note of Freakshow, i happen to think the B-Side All Kinds of Stuff is a better song over all...it's got a lovely throbbing baseline that hearkens back to A Japanese Dream, one of the Cure's best rarities, in my opinion.
