The Black Keys: "Tighten Up"

"Tighten Up," the first single from the Black Keys' upcoming sixth album, Brothers, is now streaming at their MySpace. The song is the only one on the album produced by Danger Mouse, so the softer, less explosive side of The Black Keys on display here could only be present on this one track. It's not a bad track, mind you, but there was something more ball-crushing about this band back around Thickfreakness that they haven't been able to replicate since. Here's hoping, since they produced the rest of this one by themselves, they get back to that vibe on the rest of Brothers

Brothers is due out on May 18 via Nonesuch.

I do prefer Thickfreakness-era keys, but this song is still pretty great imo..

It's just okay, to me. Just like all of Attack & Release (minus Oceans & Streams) more or less

The Big Come Up and Thickfreakness are monsters. Band has been a slow decline into the indie Kings of Leon since then and this continues that trend. Disappointing. Once saw this band at a tiny bar in Akron, OH and it was devastating.

I dunno man, I would not equate the difference in quality between the big come up and attack & release to that between youth & young manhood and whatever that ghey album with sexy fire was called.. I see your point, although I am hopeful for a resurgence of, as Winstorfer put it, the "ball-crushing" style on Brothers...

I don't think the fall-off in quality is on the same level as Kings of Leon but it seems the whole garage/blues revival thing follows a pretty basic formula...start off with raw and exciting first couple albums and then slowly but surely dilute your sound with overproduction and stylistic schizophrenia. White Stripes perfected this career path and Black Keys and KoL have followed suit in their own ways.

why would they try to, as you say, "replicate" a sound from their 2nd album? that seems foolish to me. the new song is great. soulful and groovy. me love it long time.

To compare the "decline" of the black keys to the tragedy that is KoL is a joke. Attack and Release, while not being as solid blues wise as the big come up or thickfreakness, is definitely a good album. There is no way these boys could keep churning out straight blues licks anyway, it would get stale. For brothers, I'm hoping for some grooves like on Blakroc, but without the rapping obviously. Cant wait

Everyone here should check out the new Jon Spencer Blues Explosion album! It covers his entire career plus many rarities http://www.thejonspencerbluesexplosion.com/. It's a blues rock must have
