Record sales may have crashed to a near all-time low, but The Black Keys have firmly entered the mainstream after debuting at no. 3 on the Billboard chart with current album Brothers. Last night (July 20) the band appeared on Jay Leno’s show to perform this version of “Tighten Up” from the album, essentially replicating their Letterman appearance from a few months ago.
There are essentially two types of Black Keys song—the tightly wound raucous barnstormer and the slow burning mid-paced ballad, and “Tighten Up” belongs in the latter category, with be-suited singer/guitarist Dan Auerbach churning out a meaty riff over Patrick Carney’s stodgy beats.
