On Tuesday night The Black Keys played “Gold on the Ceiling” on the Colbert Report, which they performed again yesterday for David Letterman’s show. This is the kind of raw, blues-based rock the duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney has spent the last 10 years slowly refining, where big dumb riffs are matched with hook-laden vocal melodies. The formula hasn’t failed them yet and it’s likely that the new El Camino will be the band’s biggest success to date. Letterman seems to be obsessed by the fact that the band is from Akron, Ohio, in this clip—for reasons that aren’t really clear—but I guess he’s got to fill those endless intros and outros somehow.
