The Bird and The Bee

"One on One" (Hall and Oates Cover) (Prefix Premiere)

The cover album is oft a misguided idea from the start, because it always begs the question, "Why bother?" However, when soul pop outfit Hall and Oates, who draws straightfaced reverence from some corners and automatic scoffing from others, is involved, along with Los Angeles pop duo The Bird and the Bee, the answer seems obvious.

On Interpreting the Masters Volume 1: A Tribute to Daryl Hall and John Oates, Greg Kurstin and Inara George cover 9 of the duo's best tracks, and offer up an original song, "Heard It On the Radio." "One on One" is one of Hall and Oates' cheesier tracks, but here The Bird and The Bee offer up a faithful and surprisingly serious cover. How is it that vocalist Inara George makes the clumsy sports metaphor work? Could it have something to do with The Bird and The Bee never appearing in a clip of Yacht Rock.

I dunno what the point is here. This isn't a bad cover, per se, but it is very faithful. Would be nice to hear something that could get people who wouldn't give Hall & Oates a second look to explore further but this is a very straight cover. If you don't dig this, no chance you'll like Hall and Oates and if you already like Hall and Oates, this is just unnecessary.
