Ted Leo and the Pharmacists: "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" (Tears For Fears Cover) (Live On A.V. Undercover)

· by

The A.V. Club premiered the first episode of its "A.V. Undercover" performance series today, which features 25 bands performing from a list of 25 covers as chosen by the A.V. Club. Once the song has been chosen, the next band in the studio can only pick from 24 songs, and so forth until the last band has to play the last song on the list. Up first is adept coverer Ted Leo, who, along with his Pharmacists, tackles Tears for Fears' splendid "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Ted prefaces the performance with a story of telling his dad that the song is his favorite, which explains how he kills the lyrics. Nice solos here too. This one is almost impossible to really mess up though; as long as you hit the choruses and the solos, you're golden. And Leo totally is here.

Cool idea for a performance series. I wonder what else is on the list, and who else is slated to perform.

The list is over at their site--I'm curious about who is going to do Paper Planes. The performers they're keeping under wraps though.

This is awesome. I wanna hear a cover of "Pale Shelter" now.

Saw them do this live at the record release show last week. I thought that live band karaoke was going to be a train wreck, but most of the people were straight professionals. Tons of fun if you ever get a chance to see them do a live karaoke set.
