While this group certainly had plenty of accolades before last year, everything really came together for Tanya Morgan upon the release of Brooklynati. The album did more than just top year-end lists and draw comparisons to the likes of De La Soul. It represented the last time anyone could mistake them for a neo soul singer. With Brooklynati, the trio of Von Pea, Ilyas, and Donwill crafted a stellar record that took listeners on a boom-bap journey through an imagined city featuring homages to, among others, Questlove and J Dilla. Tanya Morgan also rekindled the flame of the Native Tongues era while putting their own spin on that trademark early 1990s sound.
Although each member has released or is currently recording a solo project, the trio is still pushing its acclaimed 2009 album. The latest track to get the single and video treatment is the fun-loving, lighthearted "Bang & Boogie." The three MCs reminisce on their younger years and sexual encounters with ladies over a funky, driving production with the video matching the lyrics perfectly. As I have written before, it's always interesting when the visuals follow the story within the track, especially when the content is hilarious. And I personally found Ilyas' tale (the second one) the best, just based on the humor alone.
