The Playlist is asking whether Joaquin Phoenix is the new Crispin Glover, and they may have a point. Phoenix appeared bedraggled and annoyed at David Letterman’s line of questioning when he appeared on the Late Show last night (Feb. 11), but he did take time out to talk about his burgeoning hip-hop career.
The talk show host says he hopes that Phoenix returns to acting, and asks him if he’s perusing a similar musical career to his appearance in Walk the Line. “No, I do hip-hop music,” said Phoenix, to hoots of laughter and derision from the studio audience. “What do you have them on?” asks the former actor, gesturing toward the crowd. “What do you gas them up with?”
Phoenix spends most of the interview giving monosyllabic answers, and threatens to return to the show to perform his music. Letterman seems less than eager to return that favor. This clip has highlights from the bizarro world interview, which also features Phoenix sticking his gum on Letterman’s desk and ends with the talk show host saying: “Joaquin, I’m sorry you couldn’t be here tonight.” [The Playlist]
