The more and more I think about it, and listen to it, the more I’m convinced Shabazz Palaces’ upcoming debut LP, Black Up, is this year’s best album. It deconstructs rap and electronic music in a way that will reaffirm your belief in the artistic merits of both, and it’s impressionistic in a way that not many albums are. The only analog the album has is Blowout Comb, the highly impressionistic last album from Shabazz’s Ishmael Butler’s Digable Planets, and even that comparison falls under scrutiny. So with that out of the way, listen to “Swerve…” the closing track on the album, and a perfect distillation of the Shabazz Palaces sound. You will not be disappointed.
Black Up is due out on June 28 via Sub Pop.
