Surfer Blood: Surfer Blood: "Floating Vibes" (MP3)

Surfer Blood is a young band, and its first MP3 offering, "Swim," is thick with the plunders of youth: hook-happy hopefulness, bombastic energy, and a pop-punk ethos recollective of American Idiot. The track made No. 37 on Pitchfork's Best Tracks of 2009 list, with Spin and the New York Times throwing kudos to the outfit. This is all a formula for over-hyping, of course. But this second track off of Astro Coast has all the polish and catchiness of a successful indie-pop song and barely sounds like the work of a fledgling band; Surfer Blood could be as good as its praise would indicate.
