Superhumanoids is a four-piece dream pop band from Los Angeles, "an electronic experiment to escape the everyday of the everyday" according to their website. Hey, we hate Los Angeles too! The sound of speeding through the concrete jungle comes through hard on "Cranial Contest," off the upcoming Urgency EP, opening with a languid beat that sounds a little like Broken Social Scene's "Cause=Time" before the lament of urban romance kicks in.
You can hear that '80s new wave influence coming through, like Simple Minds at their most urgent. It's typical sad-boy-meets-happy-girl material--"The saddest part of this is the way that we kiss / It makes me feel right, yeah it makes me feel right"--but scrubbed with an electric guitar, the little flourishes pacing the communication breakdown, it comes together for an exasperating pop release. When the spindly guitar lines chime in, that's when you're supposed to dance (or gently sway). It's not groundbreaking stuff, but it'll sure score your lazy afternoon.
Urgency comes out in July.
