Superchunk: "In Between Days" (Cure Cover) (Video)

· by

Indie rock O.G.'s Superchunk are the latest outfit to hit A.V. Club's Undercover series, tackling the Cure's "In Between Days." The band technically had the option of playing their "Detroit Has a Skyline," but they do bang-up work on this jam, making it into a pop-punk anthem that could have been on any early Superchunk album. Great guitar tones, great everything. For some reason, I enjoy the fact that Mac McCaughan's speaking voice is as high as singing voice; I saw Bear in Heaven recently, and lead singer Jon Philpot's voice is super deep when he's talking, but high when he's singing. In this case, Mac's not putting on that voice at all.

Superchunk's first album in almost ten years, Majesty Shredding, is due out on Sept. 14 via Merge.

This series has pretty much been my favorite bands playing my favorite songs. This one being that taken to the extreme.
