Recently resurgent indie-rock vets Superchunk have begun the gift-giving a little early this year, treating us to their take on John Cale's twisted chamber pop classic "Child's Christmas In Wales." While Cale's ambiguous lyrics make it difficult to decipher if the song even has anything to do with the holidays, it's always a treat to have more Superchunk to listen to.
The band takes the delightfully fey original and smears fuzzy guitars all over it, forgoing the prominent tinkling piano for an electric crunch. Superchunk does justice to the refined melody, with singer Mac McCaughan's nasally vocals a surprisingly good substitute for Cale's own fastidious singing style. [Cover Me]
