In 1992, the world got their first introduction to the prematurely mournful sounds of 25-year-old Mark Kozelek. Ironically, he's only now--at age 43--releasing music that's as optimistic as it is heartbreaking.
This track, in typical Kozelek fashion, does quite a lot with quite a little--in this case just an acousic guitar and that voice that gets richer with each release (although I'm fairly confident it's double-tracked, here). Even without that voice, though, this song would be immediately recognizable as Kozelek: he's one of the few sad-man-and-his-guitar acts around to have crafted a finger-picking style uniquely his own. And Kozelek is one of the few who could say "Leona" over and over again and turn it into a song's heart-stopping hook. You can stream "You Are My Sun" at Caldo Verde Records, who will be releasing Admiral Fell Promises on July 13.
Sick writeup, dude. Koz 4 life haha.
Thanks man. Can't wait for this album.
Not sure about the optimistic part. If you've heard the other 2 songs streaming, they're much more on the gloomy side than "You are my Sun." Especially "Australian Winter."
