Furthering the list of big indie stinks that have contributed to the AIDS research and awareness benefitting Dark Was The Night compilation, Sufjan Stevens did this cover of Castanets' "You Are The Blood," which is maybe a little weird considering that blood is one of the fluid mediums that has a high enough count of the HIV virus to transmit it to someone else. Sufjan's turns the original into a topographically bizarre, sprawling epic, ranging from glitch-y zaniness to Sufjan's standard instrumental sentimentality. The Dark Was The Night
compilation is out on 4AD on Feb. 17. [Stereogum]

It's weird how everyone is heaping praise of Sufjan for going off the deep end on this track, when there are thousands of bands who produce better songs that go even further and don't get the same accoades. Bands such as the Castanets, for instance, who's cover is still 10 times better.
