Stereolab

Three Women (Track Review)

Average Rating: 7.50
"Three Women" is the first given sample of Stereolab's ninth studio album Chemical Chords, and it does nothing to dispel the notion that the band gathered the ingredients for their particular soup almost a decade ago and are now content just to tweak its proportions. Which is not to say that the broth's not tasty. Lætitia Sadier's francophone coos are among the most easily appealing that the underground has ever produced. The band's mechanically precise rhythm section, here represented by a unquestionably sturdy bass line, can rarely be faulted. The song's relative brevity is welcome in a catalog that swells with eight-minute organ workouts as well. But if the band has never clicked for you, a little bit more brass or a dash of playful synth melody is unlikely to transform your preconceived preferences, even in this light and creamy single serving. If you're looking for another Stereolab song, this is one. [MP3 via Pitchfork]
