Annie Clark brought the full St. Vincent experience to KCRW yesterday (Feb. 10) for a session on Morning Becomes Eclectic. On this clip she performs a version of the opening track from last year’s Actor album, the beautifully mournful “The Strangers,” complete with flute and violin accompaniment.
Clark may be singing “paint the black hole blacker,” but “The Strangers” is actually oddly uplifting, especially when the band hits its stride and some of that trademark St. Vincent distorted guitar is piled on top. It’s a typically angular song, full of unexpected turns and odd stop-start moments—but that’s the sound that makes Actor worth returning to again and again.
