Annie Clark is gearing up to play a couple of shows with Tune-Yards around the time of her Coachella appearance in April. Her appearance on Conan O’Brien’s show last night gave a taste of what to expect at those concerts, via a performance of “Cheerleader” from Strange Mercy. It begins with a brief blast of Elvis Costello’s “Radio Radio,” before Clark halts the song and says, “I’m sorry ladies and gentlemen, there’s no reason to play that song.” After that unusual beginning we get to “Cheerleader,” which is full of thick and scratchy guitar tones and sheet-like synth sounds. It’s impressive how St. Vincent songs always take on new shapes and colors when taken out into a live setting, and “Cheerleader” is no exception. Check it out in the clip below.
