Spoek Mathambo: "Let Them Talk"
While we spent last year geeking out to Sub Pop's hip-hop signing Shabazz Palaces, and his great album, Black Up(our number one album of 2011), it was easy to ignore the fact that Sub Pop signed another hip-hop influenced sound shifter: South Africa's Spoek Mathambo, who put out Put Some Red On It EP last year. This year, he issues Father Creeper, his sophomore LP on Sub Pop, and the label just let loose with the lead single: It's called "Let Them Talk," and it's part indie rock, part South African music, part rap, and all Spoek. All told, this is the most conventionally "indie" track on the album, which is why it's a shrewd move to put this one out first. It's easy to see fans of Sub Pop's traditional bands getting behind this one. Stream it below. Father Creeper is due out on March 13:
