Soft Circle: "Reaper"
Soft Circle, for those unfamiliar, is the solo project of Hiram Akira Bharoocha, who is known in various indie circles as being a founding/former member of Lightning Bolt, and of art rockers Black Dice. On Soft Circle's new album Shore Obsessed, Bharoocha is teamed up with Benjamin Vida on guitar/synth, instead of having to rely entirely on his banks of loops and other effects. The collaboration really shines on "Reaper," which piles on layer after layer of synths, prickly guitars, and intensifying drums to transfixing effect. For those accustomed to Bharoocha's more avant garde work, this track might come as a huge surprise due to its straightforwardness. At the same time, it could also act as a great introduction for those wanting to get familiar. Give it a listen over at Stereogum.
