Slim the Mobster: 'War Music' (Mixtape)

Los Angeles-based spitter Slim the Mobster has one of hip-hop's biggest names in his corner. Care to guess? Here's a hint: Slim is a thuggish rapper through and through, he claims to have been a member of the Crips, and his uncle is gangster Freeway Ricky Ross. Yeah, that should make it easier.

Give up? It's Dr. Dre, who has been mentoring the up-and-coming spitter these past few years. Slim's new mixtape, War Music, is the culmination of Dre's tutelage and he even appears on the project as both a guest MC and producer. Most notably, he spits the opening bars on tape highlight "Back Against the Wall," which he produced with Jake One.

Elsewhere, Dre's touches can be heard in the project's mastering and overall thick, unapologetically gangster atmosphere. Other features on War Music include fellow Dre protege Kendrick Lamar, Mobb Deep's Prodigy, and Snoop Dogg. You can download the mixtape at DJ Booth.
