Sholi: "All That We Can See" (Video)

· by

One of this year’s most criminally overlooked albums came by way of San Francisco’s Sholi back in March. The Payam Bavafa-led project tackles prog-influenced song structures and complex instrumental interplay that is sure to delight fans of Dirty Projectors, Ponytail and Liars. Deerhoof’s drummer Greg Saunier offered production tips via email that are especially recognizable on songs like the eponymous album’s opener, “All That We Can See.” The track kicks off with a schizophrenic drum exhibition and a fluttering guitar arpeggio before moving toward something more familiar. The tune is set against the structured chaos of the evolution of life in the video. You don’t have to be a science major to enjoy the Zeek Earl-directed clip, though it probably wouldn’t hurt. Totally underrated/forgotten, this was the second-to-last record that Touch & Go put out.
