Zooey Deschanel may have appeared overawed by the incredible success of her second album with M. Ward, Volume Two, on priorlate night TV performances. But last night (May 20) she appeared to find a more comfortable outlet on Carson Daly’s show, where she was filmed playing before her own audience at the El Rey Theater in Los Angeles.
“Black Hole” is an odd choice of song—it’s taken from the first She & Him album—but perhaps the pair just feel like they don’t need to push that new record anymore. Instead, this song gives Deschanel a chance to relax into her performance, bounce around the stage, and generally look like she’s actually enjoying this music thing after all.
seems like her voice gets more consistent with each performance...
The issue with Zooey Deschanel is that she's not really that good at performing music. She's adorable, she dresses in the coolest clothes, but as a singer she's mediocre. And I can't say that as a fan of, you know, music, I stay up nights wondering just when Deschanel will finally get comfortable enough with not performing music very well that she can finally relax and enjoy not performing music very well.
It's not like this "adorable actress can kinda sorta sing!" story is sucking up oxygen that could sustain the career of someone who is actually good at performing music.
