Sharon Jones brought her Dap-Kings to the Colbert Report last night, where they performed “She Ain’t a Child No More” from the new album I Learned the Hard Way. But the highlight, as with any appearance on Colbert, was the brief interview with Jones, where he hauled her over the coals for the band’s retro sound.
“How much better would James Brown sound if we could auto-tune him? Get with the times, my friend!” said Colbert. Jones also mused on her days working as a corrections officer at Rikers Island, explained how the lineup for the Dap-Kings works, and even offered a little musical backing for Colbert as he introduced the band.
Great singer, but I wonder what kind of corrections officer she was. Cool but tough? Strict and no-nonsense?
