Serena Maneesh: "Opium Priest"
On their upcoming split with Toronto punkers Fucked Up, Norwegian noise-poppers Serena Maneesh get weird. Like, really weird. "Opium Priest" is seven minutes of barely contained chaos, featuring fever-dream vocals, a constant dirge-like bass, and guitars that seem to double as shrapnel cannons. It's a far cry from anything on their last full length, S-M2: Abyss In B Minor, yet comes from the same sessions that spawned that album. If anything, it takes the Abyss part of that title firmly to heart. Maybe Serena Maneesh felt like they had something to prove when they found out they were doing a split with Fucked Up, who are the reigning champs of pulling out weird tricks for their singles and more limited releases. Either way, it's a document of a band exploring their outer limits, and doing so pretty successfully.
