Serena Maneesh: "I Just Want To See Your Face"

· by

Serena-Maneesh, disappearing for five years into their neo-shoegaze haze, have finally emerged with a few new tracks from their upcoming album, ambitiously titled S-M 2: Abyss In B Minor. Recently joining the eclectic 4AD roster, the band has decided to expand their sound slightly, letting previously buried pop elements come up for air.

First we have "Ayisha Abyss," a track that genuinely swings, moving quickly along the dark atmosphere it creates through whispered vocals, heavy percussion, and pulsating, effect-heavy guitars. Now we have the appropriately titled "I Just Want To See Your Face," a faster, angrier track, but this time with the female vocals more present in the mix. For the true distortion-heads, the feedback is still there -- it's just not dominating the rest of the group. The songs, for this reason, are less derivative, and are able to display elements that may have seemed muddy in the past.

So far, it's a good sign. For a band that was close to be left behind, they're doing a great job at building excitement for their new album.
