You have to give this to Salem: They seem perfectly unaware about the controversy that surrounds their music, specifically that their "appropriation" of southern rap is the latest version of blackface. Because here's their video for "Sick," which features shots of guys on the street, women dancing, gang wars, and fist fights, most of these featuring African Americans. I feel like this is the final indictment of everyone who picked King Night as one of their albums of the year.
If this counts as groundbreaking, I want to be suffocated with Waka Flocka Flame CDs. If this is a "deconstruction" of rap, I want to be literally deconstructed. Can we all be done with these guys no? Is it finally cool to admit they suck? Please? [P4K]
youre really going to complain about this group while praising odd future? kind of perplexing. just b/c they're white and have appropriated southern rap? odd future has arguably appropriated punk rock/skateboarding aesthetics (from white people). does being a journalist/listener instead of a musician automatically absolve you from feeding into any kind of "blackface"? entertainment? I don't even think salem is good, just something maybe you should think about.
