Yesterday Electric Independence put up footage of glitchy DJ and producer RJD2 giving a tour of his West Philadelphia home studio. The place looks like a combination of Jason Bateman's music room and basement in Juno; a plain room that is decked out with all manner of instruments, from an insane variety of analog synths to bongos and entire shelf of different tambourines. RJ talks about the Leslie power amp, the Yamaha CS80, his recording setup, and how his track with Aceyalone became the theme for Mad Men. The guy shows us a bit about how he goes from a blank circuit board to a new piece for his modular synth, and even spends some time making what looks like an absolutely delicious apple-raspberry cobbler. That dude likes synths.
Wow, I have a whole new appreciation for RJD2 now. I have liked his music for a while, but he seems like a really cool, down-to-earth regular guy. I can totally see parallels between his cooking and his music, too.
