“Riot” F. Black Thought

Formerly one half of the now-defunct L.A. hip-hop duo U-N-I, Thurz is set to make his solo debut next week with LA Riot. And as its title implies, it’s an album dedicated to the 1992 riots that occurred following the beating of Rodney King. But before you start wondering if it’s going to be too preachy or socially conscious, just take a listen to the latest single, “Riot,” and get familiar. This is the grimiest track we have heard in a minute, from Black Thought’s teeth-clenched opening bars to DJ Khalil’s bangin’, organs-driven production to Thurz’s frustration-fueled verse. Y’all better not sleep on LA Riot, which drops Aug. 9.
