We previously heard from Quantic -- aka England-born/Colombia-based Will Holland -- when he threw together a great mix of dusty old Ethiopian records in March 2010. Since then, it appears he has split his time between digging deeper in the African crates and honing his skills on the accordion. He took up the instrument three years ago while diving headfirst into the Cumbia music scene.
And one of the first tracks he recorded during his experimentation with the genre was "Cumbia De Dilla," Holland's own take on J Dilla's "Rico Suave Bossa Nova" off Welcome 2 Detroit. The cover gained some steam when Holland began spinning it during DJ sets as the crowd absolutely loved it. After seeing the reaction, Holland hit the studio to record a full EP's worth of hip-hop covers under the name Quantic Y Su Conjunto Los Miticos Del Ritmo.
Together, Holland and his band took on KRS-One's “Step Into A World," Dr. Dre’s “Nuthin' But A G Thing,” Missy Elliot’s “Get UR Freak On,” Pete Rock & CL Smooth’s “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.),” and, of course, the aforementioned Dilla track. The band also recorded an original cut, “Cuarta Con Cuarta.” Here we have their cover of the Pete Rock & CL Smooth classic, which sounds just as great as you would hope. It's a shuffling, fetching piece destined to cause some nostalgic chills. Those horn stabs will never, ever go out of style.
Stream the track below. The EP drops June 13.
