Lower Dens’ Nootropics is set for release on May 1, with expectations for it considerably heightened by the excellent “Brains.” The reputation of the Baltimore-based band is only going to be heightened by “Propagation,” which is another taste of that upcoming record. This further demonstrates a maturity to their work, with the thin atmosphere of early Cure records recalled, largely due to the reedy guitar tones deployed throughout. Jana Hunter’s vocal is appropriately sullen here, perfectly adding to the doomy atmosphere that subtly builds up to some Cocteau Twins-esque passages as the song finally breathes out at its close. There’s a limited edition single featuring “Brains” and “Propagation” out now—check it out here
