"Why Go" (Pearl Jam Cover) (Video)

Average Rating: 10.00
As part of a celebration for the deluxe reissue of Pearl Jam's debut album Ten , which was released today, MTV2 asked a number of groups to cover their favorite tracks from the grunge classic. Perhaps the strangest among them is Midwestern rapper P.O.S., who takes on "Why Go" in this video. He's an even more surprising choice when you consider the other bands tapped for the project are the boring whiners of Staind and the equally pretentious and plain The Academy Is…

But even though P.O.S. warns us about his voice at the beginning, stating that "There's no auto-tune in Grunge Music, guys," he actually proves a very able stand-in for Mr. Vedder. He lays some nice keyboard lines over his reprogrammed version of the song, and though at its base this cover is pretty faithful to the original, it's still pretty damn good. P.O.S. pays irony-free homage and puts his own spin on the song at the same time. Not bad for an MTV2 project that is, in about every other way, a dull failure.

I was never a big PJ fan, but I thought this was a pretty cool cover.

Here's a quote from P.O.S. about covering Pearl Jam:

"I was asked if I was interested in covering a pearl jam song by mtv2. I thought it was funny that they wanted to include me, being a rapper and all, but I wanted to take a shot at it. I loved ten when it came out, rocked the tape till it popped. One of my favorites on it was why go, none of the bands they asked had picked it yet so I did. I though about reworking the original lyrics into a rap kind of situation, but then I was playing the melody on one of my keyboards and thought it might be more fun to just straight cover it. So I did. It was fun. I hope you likes it." - P.O.S

March 24, 2009 at 9:42 p.m.

i definitely wouldn't call this a failure dude.

March 24, 2009 at 9:42 p.m.

He's POS because he turns good songs into pieces of s**t.

The P.O.S. clip = opposite of failure.

The Staind and The Academy Is... stuff that was also part of MTV2's promotion (and not included here) = failure to the nth degree.

So close. You could've taken that in so many different directions, brob.

Nice... Haven't heard this song in so long. Good to hear a different take.

It is great to hear a cover where you can tell the artist is a real fan of the song. It may be stripped down, but it is all love. I hope this gets other people to check out his other stuff and then hopefully Doomtree and other RSE artists. P.O.S. is one of the best in the game today and Pearl Jam wrote songs that will never get old, only better. I'm calling a WIN. Minnesota Nice!

Peace all

first heard pearl jam when i was about 8 years old... brother got me a Choices shirt that i still rock on UA campus today. This cover was freakin awesome; i cant think of many ways to sucsessfully incorporate hip hop elements into Pearl's grunge setting

im feelin it!!!!

That's a cool little one-man-band thing. But it goes without saying that it doesn't have the power of PJ bashing it out.
Fun with electronics does not equal a proven group of talented musicians.

brob hits one out of the park with a super-insightful comment! Way to go, rockstar! You clearly are an authority on all things good and awesome. I doubt you were asked by MTV to cover this song, unlike POS. If that was a deliberate trolling attempt, you fail. If it was your actual comment on the quality of the song, you also fail. Fail squared!

The song was very good.

Pffft. This guys voice is fantastic. I don;t know if he was genuinely being modest or he was just playing with us.

Haven't checked out any of his hip-hop yet, but I sure as hell will now. Guy could easily sing his own hooks/samples!
