“Portrait In Black And Blue”

True Panther has just released a new song off the forthcoming EP from UK enfant terrible King Krule (formerly Zoo Kid, née Archy Marshall). Like previous tracks that have emerged, such as the dubby and druggy “The Noose of Jah City,” the production on “Portrait in Black and Blue” is minimal and hazy and a loose consciousness pervades Marshall’s lyrics. The song is a sort of homage to Chet Baker, with Marshall singing about “spastic gyrations” over a jazzy chord base. So far, King Krule has shown a preternatural ability to capture a mood. If there’s more where that came from, this 17-year-old could be one of the most promising and authentic songwriters of the year.
