Along with an accomplished solo career, soulful songstress Goapele has garnered a following thanks to some choice collaborations with hip-hop acts over the years. She’s mostly stuck to working with West Coast rappers and crews, such as E-40 and Hieroglyphics, though she’s also spent time in the studio with Mos Def and Dwele. Next month, however, the focus will be solely on Goapele as she returns from a five-year hiatus with Break of Dawn, an album featuring production from Drumma Boy and Kanye West.
On her latest single, “Play,” she’s backed by some sexy, downtempo instrumentation from Dan Electric and Teddy Thunderbolt. Directors John Mazyck and Dahveed, of Detail Shoppe, have captured the track’s sensuality with an understated approach that’s gripping and hypnotizing. There’s something to be said for not throwing sexuality in our faces. Subtlety ain’t dead yet.
Break of Dawn drops Oct. 24 on Decon.
