Pictureplane: "Dark Rift" (MP3)

Time was a song was named after the lyric repeated most often in it (in this case that would be "we are free"), but this song by Pictureplane works by subverting expectations. It sounds like a dance tune, but some of its constituent parts make it hard to dance to. Two different drumbeats simultaneously skitter and plod while synthesizers disrupt the beat. The instruments scream dance, but this song calls for listening. "Dark Rift" is the title track on Pictureplane's debut album, out now on Lovepump United. [Pitchfork]
