Phoenix

"Lisztomania" and "1901" (Live on SNL) (Video)

Any y'all see SNL this week? I neglected to watch it, but it boasted the only tantalizing music-host combo I've wanted to watch in a long time, as Seth Rogen hosted and French rockers Phoenix provided the jams. The band has a new record coming out in May, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix , that boasts a handful of really great songs, two of them being "1901" and "Lisztomania," the two songs Phoenix played yesterday. The band's relatively airy sonics provided little for the SNL sound engineers, who have taken their lumps recently, to really mess up, so the mixing is better than most recent performances on the show. Frontman Thomas Mars played the focused frontman role really well, and the rest of his band helped by giving energetic takes of the songs. Unfettered garage rock/new wave shouldn't still be this great. "1901" is above, and "Lisztomania" is below.

One of the best SNL performances this year (there aren't many).

Phoenix was good but the skits sucked

they were fierce, you could tell they were having the times of their life, made all the difference. i laughed precisely twice throughout the whole 90 minutes, once at bill hader (wrong number joke) and once at guitarist branco's new hairdo. to say SNL is padding things out with ads is an understatement. still, they booked phoenix! major kudos for that....
