Peter Murphy: "I Spit Roses" (Video)

· by

Despite the rather unimaginative title of his ninth solo effort, which is, yes, called Ninth, Peter Murphy's ability to intertwine evocative prose with shimmering, dark melody remains intact 30+ years into his career.

While not as compelling as some of his more recent solo material, like "Things to Remember" off of 2002's Turkish-inspired LP, Dust, the former Bauhaus frontman brings back vivid memories of his seminal 1989 effort, Deep, with "I Spit Roses," the first single from Ninth. Murphy's voice still sounds majestic, though it never towers over the clashing synth strings, stuttering drums and churning guitars. But is it just us or does this video, which was directed by Justin Coloma, seem heavily inspired by Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight?"

Ninth is out now via Nettwerk.

Quite a compliment being compared to one of the greatest music videos of all time. Thank you Kiran!
