Pavement fought off the rain to play a series of shows in New York City this week, and last night they showed up on Jimmy Fallon’s show to deliver this version of “Stereo” from Brighten the Corners. It’s not exactly the classic Pavement material people might want, but it gives guest guitarist Steve Goss—who won an online competition to play with the band—a chance to jam with his idols.
This is actually a lot more in the spirit of Pavement’s earlier shows than that stiff Colbert Report performance, with the band members goofing around a little onstage and Goss doing a fine job of filling out the sound. It’s also a reminder that Bob Nastanovich was always Pavement’s secret weapon, with his odd yelps and backing vocals providing welcome respite from Malkmus’s studied nonchalance.
