Is it weird that Patrick Wolf "gets" Kate Bush better than anyone, or does it make perfect sense? Whatever the case, Wolf's cover of Bush's 1980 single "Army Dreamers" makes everything clear, and actually takes the song's anti-war message to new heights.
On the original single, Bush's impossibly high voice is backed only by an acoustic guitar and an "army" of chanting soldiers. It's definitely a sad song, but the music video tends to cheapen it a bit. On Wolf's cover, he employs his piano playing and a marching snare to make the sound much bigger, his vocals sounding frantic as he retells the war story of a mother grieving for dead son.
The cover is part of the PEACE compilation for Amnesty International, with proceeds used to prevent international abuses of human rights. Patrick Wolf's new album The Conquerer drops later this year. [TwentyFourBit]
Very good cover.
I didn't like it at all. I thought it was horrible. He brought no real emotion, feeling, or anything new to the song. What a waste of... what a waste of music.
